Pricing + Services

What can I expect at my appointment? 

• Legal Services only cost $10, which is due when you book your appointment.

• To qualify for legal services, you must be an MSU or Gallatin College student taking 7+ credits.

• Each appointment lasts 30 minutes.

• Please arrive a couple of minutes before your appointment or sign in to Zoom early if you are meeting virtually.

• Make sure to bring any important documentation with you to your appointment for your attorney to review. You may also upload documents to our portal when scheduling your meeting.

• Our office offers “Limited Scope Representation” services, which you can learn more about by clicking here: Unbundled Legal Services.

• Please note that if your issue involves MSU as an opposing party, such as in a lawsuit, or if you are involved in an internal-campus procedure, such as academic or student misconduct, we may be limited in the services or advice we can provide.

Minor in Possession of Alcohol (MIP)

If you are under the age of 21 and you have been drinking, or have an alcoholic beverage with you, you can be charged with an MIP.  If you have received a ticket, please make an appointment with us so we  can advise you about how to proceed in Court.  

Alcohol and Drug Related Offenses

If you have been charged with a DUI, Possession of marijuana or other drug, or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia it is paramount to discuss with us prior to going to Court.   For first drug related offenses you are generally entitled to a "deferred imposition of sentence" which means that after a period of time, if you follow all of the conditions of your sentence and you do not get into additional trouble, the charge will be dismissed from your record. 

With a DUI, there is a possibility of jail time, so if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.

Other Criminal Charges

We are well versed in all criminal law, including felonies.  If you are charged with a misdemeanor or felony or you believe you may be charged with a crime, please contact us immediately.   If a police officer has contacted you for an interview please see us first. 

Divorce and Parenting Issues

Our attorneys can assist you with the complex parts of your divorce or parenting case, while teaching you how to handle the rest yourself.   We can give you legal advice, draft your documents for you, or recommend a course of action.   Due to budgetary constraints, we cannot provide full representation in family law cases. 

Name Change

We can help you legally change your name.  When we meet, we will review the documents you need to fill out and help you determine the best course of action.  For transgender students, we have worked with the Diversity office to create appropriate forms for requesting a legal name and gender change with the Court.   

Landlord Tenant Issues

If you believe your landlord is being unreasonable or has withheld your security deposit, please make an appointment with us.  Make sure to bring a copy of your lease to the appointment so we can review and give you advice about how to proceed.  

Business, Nonprofit, and Tax Advising

ASMSU Student Legal Services has partnered with Blackstone Launchpad and the Office of Student Engagement to provide business and non-profit advice to students and their organizations or student groups.  We can help you determine the best business structure, help draft organizational documents, assist with IRS filings and tax issues, and give you ongoing legal advice.

Wills and Estate Planning

A well-formed estate plan safeguards the value of your assets and helps you establish a thoughtful strategy for taking care of yourself, your finances, and your family.  We can draft wills and complete estate planning documents for you. 

Immigration

We can provide limited immigration advice.  However, we can refer you to an outside immigration attorney who can answer your immigration questions in a timely manner.
